That’s such an important question...I’m really glad you asked!


Most garbage in the ocean actually starts on land. When someone drops trash on the ground (even far away from the beach), rain can wash it into storm drains. Those drains lead to small creeks and rivers, and rivers flow straight into the ocean.

Sometimes trash also blows out of open trash cans, gets left behind at the beach, or falls from boats during storms.


Once garbage gets into the water, it can float for a long time...especially plastic. Ocean currents move in big circles, and floating trash can get caught in those moving circles and stay there. That’s how it gets ā€œtrapped.ā€


The tricky part is that plastic…
